                THE PURPOSE OF

            IL VARCO DEI BIFFI

For a long time Giovanni Targetti had the vision of a meeting point for evangelism in his heart. Having retired from his work as a businessman, he was offered the opportunity to begin a Christian Coffee House in the centre of his city of Florence, in December 2004.

Giovanni and his wife Gina work tirelessly in the Christian Coffee House in the heart of Florence, together with a small group of volunteers who have come together through the various activities at Il Varco.

This centre seeks to provide a meeting place for local people as well as foreigners who come to Florence, many of whom become distracted from their walk with the Lord. By offering fellowship, live music and courses, we seek to help people to come close to the Lord. In this way we also seek to help the local churches, as it is much easier to invite non-Christians to a centre, rather than a church.

So, what do we do?

Il Varco Dei Biffi has three main objectives:

1) City Mission- the objective of which is to promote fellowship between Christians.

2) Coffee House- to welcome and integrate the foreigners who come to Florence, particularly the younger generation.

3) Christian Centre- we want to promote many activities based on daily realities in our society such as meetings and the development of Christian thought.

The scope of City Mission is to recuperate the identity of Evangelical Christians- retaking the capacity to serve our city, occupying the spaces and roles of those who have love to spend freely.

The Coffee House seeks to give a Christian welcome to the thousands of foreigners who come to Florence for long and short periods of time. Helping them to feel less out-of-place, with particular attention to the younger generation, our future citizens.

Through music, solidarity, politics, young people, and women, the Christian Centre seeks to put into practice in all communities that which we experience here.

All visions bring risks! Not all have the desired outcomes, but we are certain of one thing… it’s worth while to try!

At Il Varco we try to develop the role of a good Christian- to be as hospitable as the Good Samaritan, with the determination of David and bring forth fruit as in a vineyard.

Just like any other ministry we need people-power too! We are searching for missionaries with vision to help us meet our objectives.
